Background – Selection Process
The All-Star Teacher Award was created to recognize middle and high school teachers in Northern California who go above and beyond to inspire their students and community. An esteemed panel of community leaders selected five finalists based on four categories:
- Overall Commitment
- Excellence in Teaching
- Rapport with Students
- Level of Distinction
The five finalists were Jessica Schelegle of Sacred Heart School (Saratoga, CA); Robert Black of St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School (Vallejo, CA); Jeremiah Ellison of Independence High School (San Jose, CA); Emily Orologio of Frick Middle School (Oakland, CA); and Susan Piekarski of Irvington High School (Fremont, CA).
Each All-Star Teacher Award runner-up received $2,000 for their school.
In this last clip, Mrs. Schelegle talks about why she became a teacher ...
From Kirsten Verhofstadt, Sacred Heart Educator of the Year 2008
Jessica is the kind of teacher that makes a lasting impact on kids. Not only does she teach them the required curriculum, but she also adds that special ingredient that makes the kids inspired to learn and excel. Long after these kids have grown up and had their own children there will be a place in their hearts for Mrs. Schelegle. They may not remember everything she taught them, but they will remember the impact she had on their lives ... the difference she made.
