Support Group – Enrichment
Charter
Enhances educational and extracurricular activities to develop strong, well-rounded students by leveraging the time and talent of parents and community members.
Where We Focus
- Assist in setting up additional Enrichment Programs at Sacred Heart School
- Strengthen the Movement Lab Program by building partnerships between volunteers and the school
- Utilize the library to enhance the curriculum, One Heart Program and Catholic Identity at Sacred Heart School
- Prepare for and identify successors for 2009-2010 Room Parents and Chairs by April 2010
New This Year
- Academic Enrichment – A new afterschool dance class is being offered with all proceeds benefitting Sacred Heart School.
- Library – Curriculum for grades K-3 will all be held on Mondays this year to simplify the schedule.
- Learning Center – New this year is the addition of 3rd grade to Learning Center. They function as their own group. Half of the class meets for 45 minutes. The first half of time is spent on listening skills. The other half of our time is used to practice math one week/language the next math. Mrs. Morris gives us a focus as to what skills she'd like us work on week to week. We've also added new 1st and 2nd grade games to the language center, donated by the Csubak family.
- Room Parents – Teacher Appreciation this year will be a special day per trimester rather than one week in the spring. This gives us a chance to simplify the process and the opportunity to remember the staff in a special way throughout the year rather than just once.
- Movement Lab – Ramon Icasiano redid the stegal and several new items were added that can be used for several activities.
Current Activities
- Academic Enrichment – A new after school dance class is being offered starting December 1st. Mrs. Marylinn Fleming, parent of one of our 7th graders and a long time dance instructor, has generously offered to teach dance classes at Sacred Heart and donate 100% of the proceeds back to Sacred Heart. A free trial class is being offered after school on November 17th in the youth room just outside Geary Hall.
- Library – Library curriculum for grades K-3 is ongoing. The Fall Book Fair runs from November 8 – 13.
- Learning Center – Math/Language/Listening continue to be the focus of the curriculum.
- Room Parents – We just finished our first Teacher Appreciation day with a hearty breakfast for the faculty and notes of appreciation from the students. Our next teacher appreciation event will be sometime in February.
- Movement Lab – We continue to work on motor skills, balance, spatial awareness, and coordination.
How You Can Help
- Academic Enrichment – We are looking for someone to chair this committee. The responsibilities would include setting up after-school enrichment programs. Coordinate with the principal for days and space. Contact program directors to establish a schedule (there are many program information flyers in the school office or find your own). Send enrollment information to parents. If you are interested please contact Kathy Jain.
- Support the Library – Here are a few things that would help ...
- Consider giving a book to the library in honor of your child’s birthday, special event or just because they love to read, through our Sacred Heart Book Club
- Attend the book fair – this is the main fundraiser for the library
- Turn in your Boxtops for Education – these funds go toward the library
- Become a library volunteer
- Room Parents – Please support your room parents when they ask for food/event donations. It really helps when we all do a little and remember, they are volunteers themselves. Contact Jeanette Budenholzer or Lori Davis if you have any questions.
- Movement Lab – Please show up and be on time. This important program works only with parent volunteers. There are a list of subs available, so please if you are unable to attend your session and cannot find another parent to trade with, contact Debbi Salom.
Committee Leadership
- Academic Enrichment – The Academic Enrichment committee
is committed to offering both academic and non-academic enrichment
classes to Sacred Heart students outside of school hours to further
foster the development of strong well-rounded student.
Parent Chair: Kathy Jain (acting) - Learning Center – Learning Center is held once a week
for students in first, second, and third grade. They are divided in to small
groups to practice skills in math, language, and listening through
manipulatives, games, and other hands-on-learning tools supervised
by parent volunteers. At the same time, the teacher is then able
to work with a small group of children in the classroom.
Staff Coordinator: Cecelia Speckman
Parent Chair / Co-Chair: Gayle McCarrick / Christine Csubak - Library – The library is currently a parent volunteer
run program that staffs and does fundraising for the library. Children
in grades kindergarten through third have a weekly library time at
which they learn library skills and have story time. It is
open at various other times for students to do research and check
out books.
Parent Chair: Laurie Hayden - Movement Lab – Movement Lab is offered on Tuesday
for kindergarten through grade three to further develop students'
gross motor skills. Parent volunteers lead small groups of children
through activities developed by the athletic director. This time also
allows for the teacher to work in the classroom with a small group
of children.
Atheletic Director: Dan Fernandez
Parent Chair: Debbi Salom - Room Parent – The purpose of the Room Parent committee
is to support the teachers in communicating with the parents and
organizing special classroom activities such as field trips and class
parties.
Parent Chair / Co-Chair: Jeanette Budenholzer / Lori Davis - Sports Committee – The purpose of the Sports committee
is to advise the Administration and Athletic Director regarding
all aspects of the After-School Sports program, coordinate fundraising
activities and coordinate volunteers all in support of the sports
program.
Athletic Director: Dan Fernandez
