Dear Sacred Heart Families,

"While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him." (Lk 15:20bc).

Bill Cosby joked that, "Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home." I love that. This Sunday, as we listen to Jesus' great story of the prodigal son, we ask for the grace to 'come back home."

TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY
Last Thursday, each staff member received a complete dinner in a box. Friday morning's "water cooler" talk was about the delicious soup, the bread, salad, and the whole idea. Everyone is so appreciative and thankful for those personalized dinners. Thank you to all the room moms and class parents for all of your work in making this day possible. We were all very, very surprised and happy!

REPORT CARDS-NOW ELECTRONIC!
Our adoption of SchoolSpeak makes possible the electronic delivery of our report cards and we've decided that now is the time to take the plunge! The teachers are thrilled with this new communication ability, and we are confident that you will find it convenient and easy. Here's how it will happen: On Friday, teachers will publish their report cards on SchoolSpeak at the end of the school day. The reports will look like just like the ones you've always received, and you'll be able to save them as a PDF file. I'll send you some simple instructions for viewing and "e-signing" them. Here are the instructions:

How to View and "E-Sign" Report Cards
  • Login to SchoolSpeak using your parent login
  • Scroll down to your child's class homepage
  • Click on Report Cards (under Quick Links in the left margin)
  • Click on View
  • Review Report Card
  • Click on Sign* (bottom right hand corner)
  • Notes:
  • No physical signature will be required, but it is very important to e-sign your child's Report Card (by clicking "Sign") after you have viewed.
  • Students can view their report cards, but cannot "e-sign."
RE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE HAS PASSED!
If you haven't done so already, please send your forms and deposit in today...the re-registration and deposit is due now! We are grateful for your commitment to our school. If you have any questions, please contact us.

IN THE CLASSROOMS
Mr. Robert Tomaino, father of Ms. Tomaino taught airbrush painting to the classes today. His artwork was amazing and the students were impressed. He was available after school as well, and many interested students dropped by the art studio to try their hand at it. Watching Mr. Tomaino reminded me of how lucky we are to support an art program.

Have a nice 3rd trimester!

God bless,

Faith Formation

The Lenten journey continues...the prayers on the wall, the stations on Friday, the abstinence from meat on Friday, the cross becoming more pertinent. Can we continue to fast from our weaknesses and feast on that which is good? One thing I am doing is going running twice a week - fast from laziness and feast on exercise.  However, I make every run into a prayer.  I offer my runs up for people who are in need of prayers.  The little chores we do around the house, at school, and at work--we all can offer those things up for people we know who are in need of our prayers.

Lenten News: Why do Catholics abstain from eating meat on Fridays?Loaves and Fishes

Abstinence: The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animals derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.

On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishop's conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. They must do some penitential/charitable practice on these Fridays. For most people the easiest practice to consistently fulfill will be the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year. During Lent abstinence from meat on Fridays is obligatory in the United States as elsewhere.

Are chicken and fish considered meat?
Chicken yes, fish no. The Catholic Church's abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cattle or pigs all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Fish are a different category of animal.

Saint of the Week: Blessed Angela Salawa Blessed Angela
Friday March 12

Angela served Christ and Christ's little ones with all her strength. Born in Siepraw, near Kraków, Poland, she was the 11th child of Bartlomiej and Ewa Salawa. In 1897, she moved to Kraków where her older sister Therese lived. Angela immediately began to gather together and instruct young women domestic workers. During World War I, she helped prisoners of war without regard for their nationality or religion. The writings of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross were a great comfort to her.

Angela gave great service in caring for soldiers wounded in World War I. After 1918 her health did not permit her to exercise her customary apostolate. Addressing herself to Christ, she wrote in her diary, "I want you to be adored as much as you were destroyed." In another place, she wrote, "Lord, I live by your will. I shall die when you desire; save me because you can."

At her 1991 beatification in Kraków, Pope John Paul II said: "It is in this city that she worked, that she suffered and that her holiness came to maturity. While connected to the spirituality of St. Francis, she showed an extraordinary responsiveness to the action of the Holy Spirit" (L'Osservatore Romano, volume 34, number 4, 1991).
