Dear Sacred Heart Families,

I admit it: There was no way I could give up TV for lent because of the Olympics. Besides, they took place in my hometown and I'm very loyal. My saving grace, I hope, is that the Olympics taught me a bit about lent. In one TV interview, Apolo Ohno, the great short track speed skater, was asked about his training regimen. He explained that at the end of every training day he'd ask himself, 'Have I done everything I could today day to be better?' You just know that Apolo's one of those amazing athletes with an unworldly drive and determination. The Olympics are chock-full of those crazy, weird, and special people. They slog, they fight, pick themselves back up, and the dream of a Gold medal keeps them going day after day. St. Paul said, "Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. Every athlete exercises discipline in every way. They do it to win a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one." (1 Corinthians 9:24-26).

I'll have my cowbell out... On your mark, get set... go!

PARENT  MEETING MARCH 24th
We will be holding a Spring Parent Meeting on Wednesday, March 24th, at 6:30 PM. Babysitting will be provided. Please set aside this time to come and hear about what's going on at school from myself and the the SAC parent reps. Your input is welcome too. More information on the evening will follow in next week's bulletin. Thank you!

ACCREDITATION VISIT BY WASC

Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, our accreditation visiting committee was hard at work evaluating our programs and school. They met with teachers, students, parent reps from SAC, Fr. Gary and I. They visited classrooms, reviewed reams of material and evidence, examined our data and programs. Last Friday after school, they presented us their final report, and the news was very positive. The faculty did a fantastic job in preparation and my thanks go out to them all. The Chairperson told me that he feels we have an excellent school with high quality teachers (He has evaluated many Catholic schools in the western states.) The team was especially impressed with the students whom they reported were polite, "calm," well behaved, and welcoming. We will make the report available to you all as soon as we can. The school's self study is also available. Thanks to everyone who helped us out!

THANK YOU, HOSPITALITY
Our Hospitality team led by Mrs. Awad and Mrs. Scherp helped us put our best foot forward last week. They arranged breakfast, lunch and dinner for the visiting team. They also arranged for some nice thank you gifts. Helping out were Mrs. Rosenthal, Mrs. Mancuso, Mrs. Fluegemann, Mrs. Miranda, Mrs. Orup, Mrs. Sadilek, Mrs. Keyes, Mrs. Mailhot, Mrs. Walewski, and Mrs. Constantine. If I left your name out, please know that we appreciate everyone's help. Thanks so much!

We are blessed by your children and are grateful for your commitment to our school. If you have any questions, please contact me.

IN THE CLASSROOMS Dr.Suess Hat

Read Across America: Did you know that today is Dr. Seuss' birthday? Today is Read Across America Day. We have many parent volunteers who are reading to the students all in the name of promoting reading. Today, First Lady Michelle Obama is helping to kick off the event at the Library of Congress, along with National Education Association (NEA) President Dennis Van Roekel, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, various members of Congress, and hundreds of Washington DC students. The library of Congress has an excellent website at www.read.gov. Check it out for great reading resources for parents

First Grade: The class is working on a service project for Sacred Heart Community Services-they are filling and decorating lunch bags!

Sixth Grade: Mosey on down the hallway and check out the Tutankhamen sarcophagus paintings on the wall above the lockers. They rival the original (well, not quite!)

Seventh and Eighth Grade: The Serra Club is hosting a breakfast for our 7th and 8th graders on Thursday March 4th after Mass.  There will be a guest speaker to talk with the students about religious vocations.  In addition, the 7th and 8th grade vocation essay contest winners will be announced and presented awards.  All parents are welcome to attend.

Upper Science: Mrs. Verhofstadt has begun handing out display boards for the Science Fair... it's that time of year again!

Have a nice week,

God bless,
Tom Pulchny

Faith Formation

Fast From ...Feast On...

This morning, I talked to the students about Lent and how we as a parish are focusing on Fasting From... and Feasting On.  For example:  fast from complaining and feast on being content; fast from being mean and feast on kindness;  fast from gossip and feast on praising others. I encourage each student to pick a few things they could do and then as a family decide what you'll fast from and feast on. One student in the first grade said she will fast from junk food and feast on healthy food. We can all fast from plastic/paper bags and feast on reusable bags - this will be something we talk about at Generations of Faith on March 19, 20 and 21.  So please sign up at the Faith Formation office or email Evelyn Longo to register at e.longo@sacredheartsaratoga.org

Lenten News:  The Colors of Lent Lent Images

The color used in the sanctuary for most of Lent is purple, red violet or dark violet (see Colors of the Church Year). These colors symbolize both the pain and suffering leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus as well as the suffering of humanity and the world under sin.  But purple is also the color of royalty, and so anticipates through the suffering and death of Jesus the coming resurrection and hope of newness that will be celebrated in the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Growing in Faith Communion
March 2010 Edition

Hey Friends and Family! Check out the March edition of Growing in Faith. There are great articles on Lent. Don't forget that March 17 is St.Patrick's Day!

March Growing in Faith

Saint of the Week: St.Casimir St.Casmir

Casimir, born of kings and in line (third among 13 children) to be a king himself, was filled with exceptional values and learning by a great teacher, John Dlugosz. Even his critics could not say that his conscientious objection indicated softness. As a teenager, Casimir lived a highly disciplined, even severe life, sleeping on the ground, spending a great part of the night in prayer and dedicating himself to lifelong celibacy.

When nobles in Hungary became dissatisfied with their king, they prevailed upon Casimir's father, the king of Poland, to send his son to take over the country. Casimir obeyed his father, as many young men over the centuries have obeyed their government. The army he was supposed to lead was clearly outnumbered by the "enemy"; some of his troops were deserting because they were not paid. At the advice of his officers, Casimir decided to return home. His father was irked at the failure of his plans, and confined his 15-year-old son for three months.

The lad made up his mind never again to become involved in the wars of his day, and no amount of persuasion could change his mind. He returned to prayer and study, maintaining his decision to remain celibate even under pressure to marry the emperor's daughter. He reigned briefly as king of Poland during his father's absence. He died of lung trouble at 23 while visiting Lithuania, of which he was also Grand Duke. He was buried in Vilnius, Lithuania.
