Principal's Corner
Dear Sacred Heart
Families,
My parents always wanted
us children to feel the difference between Shrove Tuesday (the term I'm
familiar with in Canada
and which means 'absolution' in old English) and Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, we
ate our fill of delicious crepe pancakes; on Ash Wednesday, dinner was
invariably a plate of white beans with an egg on top. The stark contrast of
this simple tradition never failed to bring home the intended lesson: the fact
that we were now in a new time of year, a time of preparation for Easter. For
me as a child, Lent was a time of 'giving up something.' No doubt, this was not
exactly the correct attitude, but doing without something made Easter all the
more significant and joyful. Help keep Lent, and therefore Easter, full of
meaning for your children.
RE-REGISTRATION
TIME NOW!
Thank you to those families who have re-registered. Please let us
know your intention with the form (attached) and the deposit by February 26th. We are
blessed by your children and we are grateful for your commitment to our school.

AUCTION
DINNER
We're all getting excited about attending the Auction Dinner.
Remember that your donations benefit our whole parish community. See you there!
MRS.
CHRISTINA PARRA
As many of you know, Mrs.
Christina Parra will be leaving our school community to be a first time
Mom! Christina's last day will be Friday, March 12th and the baby is
due a few weeks after that! The Parra family is going to be busy! Christina
goes with Father Gary's and my personal gratitude for all she did to help me
get going here at the school. She's been a wonderful person to work with and
her experience here has helped me feel confident in the daily operations of the
school. We offer Christina our deepest
thanks for all of the work she has done for us in the school's front office and
wish her all the best.
NEW FRONT
OFFICE STAFF MEMBER
Taking Mrs. Parra's role in the front office is Ms. Karin Hughes.
Karin comes to us with experience in the world of education, with children, and
with front office work. We're very excited to have her on board. Karin is a
graduate of Presentation
High School and is very
familiar with Catholic education in our Diocese. We will welcome her beginning
March 1st.
IN THE
CLASSROOMS
The Staff and I are busy getting ready for our WASC accreditation
visit next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Fr. Paul Mensah visited the 7th graders last week. You
might remember that he is the priest from Ghana whose new school we
helped
stock with books. Father Paul came to talk to the class about
his homeland. By Mrs. Schelegle's account he left the students
spellbound and more appreciative of the work they did supporting his
educational support
mission in Ghana.
Another Fr. Paul, (Fr. Paul Mast) visited the 6-8th
graders this week and spoke to the students about "leaving a legacy." His talk
resonated with the students and was a great way to begin the season of Lent.
The 8th Graders went to Sacramento yesterday and had a chance to
visit (all be it very briefly) with State Senator Abel Maldonado. It was
gracious of him to meet the class as he is busy these days navigating the
waters of his re-nomination to the role of Lt. Governor. Thanks to Mr. Page for
helping get that opportunity arranged for our students. Mrs. Giammona says that
the trip was very meaningful for everyone.
Have a nice week
God bless,
Tom Pulchny

Faith Formation
From Dust We Came and To Dust We Shall Return
The journey has begun... Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and
abstinence from meat. We are marked on our forehead with the ashes from Palm
Sunday and a prayer is said, "From dust you came and to dust you shall return."
Or, "Turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." What do these prayers imply?
Adam came from the dust of the ground; he was mortal. Our days, too, are
finite. Where are we going? What is our purpose? What is the meaning of our
life? These existential questions come to the forefront of my life at every
funeral I attend and every time I fast.
If these questions go unanswered, we are like a person on a river
floating along, unaware of the deadly waterfall up ahead. We drift through life
allowing society and culture to dictate to us our values and morals. Lent is
the time we stop. We reflect. We think of others. We ponder our life and where
we are heading.

Lenten News: Why do we receive ashes during Lent?
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It
is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's
Resurrection on Easter Sunday, through which we attain redemption. Following the example of the
Nine vites, who did penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked
with ashes to humble our hearts and reminds us that life passes away on Earth.
We remember this when we are told
"Remember, Man is dust, and unto dust you shall
return."
Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the
blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and
sacrifice.
What are ashes made from?
The ashes are made from the blessed palms used
in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened
with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes
symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious
and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy
is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us
to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and
penance.

Saint of the Week: Seven Founders of the Order of Servites Wednesday February 17
Can you
imagine seven prominent men of Boston or Denver banding together, leaving their
homes and professions, and going into solitude for a life directly given to God?
That is what happened in the cultured and prosperous city of Florence in the
middle of the thirteenth century. The city was torn with political strife as
well as the heresy of the Cathari, who believed that physical reality was
inherently evil. Morals were low and religion seemed meaningless.
In 1240 seven noblemen of Florence mutually decided to withdraw from the city
to a solitary place for prayer and direct service of God. Their initial
difficulty was providing for their dependents, since two were still married and
two were widowers. Their aim was to lead a life of penance and prayer, but they soon found
themselves disturbed by constant visitors from Florence. They next withdrew to
the deserted slopes of Monte Senario.
In 1244, under the direction of St. Peter of Verona, O.P., this small group
adopted a religious habit similar to the Dominican habit, choosing to live under
the Rule of St. Augustine and adopting the name of the Servants of Mary. The new
Order took a form more like that of the mendicant friars than that of the older
monastic Orders.
Members of the community came to the United States from Austria in 1852 and
settled in New York and later in Philadelphia. The two American provinces
developed from the foundation made by Father Austin Morini in 1870 in Wisconsin.
Community members combined monastic life and active ministry. In the
monastery, they led a life of prayer, work and silence while in the active
apostolate they engaged in parochial work, teaching, preaching and other
ministerial activities.
