Dear Sacred Heart Families,

REFLECTION
G.K. Chesterton said that, "Education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another." Education the soul of society... I don't know about you, but I really have to think hard about that one. Is it the knowledge, or is it the action? Or is it both? As parents, we offer a piece of that soul every time we answer a question from our child, demonstrate a technique, or set an example, but it takes a community (school and church) to get it right. It's an awesome responsibility and the results of our efforts are the "dividends for life".

RE-REGISTRATION
With our Open House season almost over, it's now time to invite you to re-register your sons and daughters for the next school year. In today's envelope, please find a letter from me and a re-registration form. Please let us know your intention with the form and a deposit by February 26th. We are blessed by your children and are grateful for your commitment to our school. If you have any questions, please contact me-I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have.

DINNER AUCTION

SANDY FOEHR MUSTANG CLASSIC
The Sandy Foehr Mustang Classic was a classic indeed. Congratulations to our 7th graders for taking Gold in their division and the 8th graders who took silver in theirs. Thanks to all the organizers for their help. If it weren't for the dedication of our volunteers to our school and students, this event could not be possible. Thank you.

PSAS AND 2010-2011 FINANCIAL AID DEADLINE APPROACHING!
We do not want finances to prevent a family from remaining part of our school community, and will do our very best to help. If you have a question about financing tuition, please make an appointment to come and talk to me. If you believe your family will need financial assistance please complete the PSAS forms with the 2009 tax-return information. The forms must be postmarked by us by 2/19/10 so please have your forms in to us a week earlier, by the 11th of February.... THIS THURSDAY!

The School Code required by PSAS is 3073.  The forms are available in the office, and are attached here.

PSAS Form

Please note: THE PSAS FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FINANCIAL AID IN THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR.

I realize that asking for assistance is difficult. Please know that your inquiries and records are confidential, and that we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FRIDAY AND NEXT MONDAY
This Friday (Feb. 12) is a school holiday. The following Monday is President's Day, also a school holiday.

PARISH MISSION
One week from tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. To help us prepare, Fr. Gary and the parish staff have organized a Mission beginning Monday. The theme is "Sabbath Living." As parents and members of families, we have and astonishing number of duties and commitments on our plates. How do we manage to manage? As a parent, I know that it's a wonder sometimes! Fr. Paul Mast will be helping us understand how we can live the Sabbath on a daily basis. Please check with the parish office for details of this important parish event.

ASH WEDNESDAY
All students will be attending the 9 a.m. Ash Wednesday service next week. Please join us. Please note that we will not have our regular Thursday liturgy next week.

We will be collecting before Mass on Thursday and all week leading up to Valentine's Day. Thank you for your continued support of our stewardship efforts within the greater community.

Around the Corner

Next week we begin a forty day journey.  On this journey, we will come across times of reflection, times of frustration and times of peace. We make this sojourn not alone, but with one who has gone before us, one who has shown us the way and will continue to illuminate our path before us--if we are open to his love and grace. As a parish during these forty days, we embark upon a challenge to "Fast From" and "Feast On" various things.

Some of those are:
"Fast from complaining and Feast on gratitude"
"Fast from selfishness and Feast on compassion for others"
"Fast from gossip and Feast on praising others"

You may wish to come up with your own things you would like to fast from and feast on for lent.  We are all called to be good stewards of the earth God gave us, and perhaps we can even fast from disposable bottles and feast on using renewable cups or fast from using plastic/paper bags and feast on reusable bags.

Saint of the Week: Our Lady of LourdesOur Lady of Lourdes
Thursday February 11

On December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. A little more than three years later, on February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: "I am the Immaculate Conception."

Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: "O Mary conceived without sin."

During interrogations Bernadette gave an account of what she saw. It was "something white in the shape of a girl." She used the word aquero, a dialect term meaning "this thing." It was "a pretty young girl with a rosary over her arm." Her white robe was encircled by a blue girdle. She wore a white veil. There was a yellow rose on each foot. A rosary was in her hand. Bernadette was also impressed by the fact that the lady did not use the informal form of address (tu), but the polite form (vous). The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity.

Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 190
7.
