Dear Sacred Heart Families,

REFLECTION
One of the most important roles of families is preparing young people for fulfilling lives of love and service to their families, their communities, and to the Lord. Catholic education instills in students a sense of faith, knowledge, morals and discipline that will enable them to be successful individuals. Please join me in saying thank you to our teachers, SAC members, volunteers, pastor (Fr. Gary) and everyone else involved in the running of a successful school such as ours. Their dedication and commitment makes it all possible.

OPEN HOUSE SUCCESSFUL!
Open House went very well last Sunday. Thanks so much to the families who attended mass with us at 9a.m. and then came to visit the school. The teachers worked very hard to get their classrooms in tip-top shape, and show the work of their students and programs. We had a nice showing of prospective parents too. Thirty-seven families received tours from our student ambassadors. Each family left with a very good impression of our school and whole parish community. Thanks to those of you who have helped spread the word about our school.
Today, we toured five parents around the school for our Observation Open House. The next one is on February 9th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Our event could not have been a success without the dedication of our parent volunteers. Our Hospitality team, led by Mrs. Awad and Mrs. Scherp had balloons, flowers, and lots of coffee and food prepared. Our Publicity team, led by Mrs. Ball and Mrs. Arena helped with many behind the scenes jobs, managed the student ambassadors, and ensured that new parents didn't escape without leaving us their contact information! Thank you for to Mr. Klos for making a multimedia dvd to promote the school.  They say that 'many hands make light work. I'm not sure if that's always true, but it sure is more enjoyable that way. I can't mention everyone by name but offer my deepest appreciation to all of you. We had fun and thanks for making our day a successful one.

GIFTS OF THE HEART
Remember, this year, ALL the money raised will go directly to support the goals of our technology initiative outlined in our campaign brochure. In other words, it goes directly to the immediate benefit of the teachers and students. We are nearing the end of our campaign and so far, we've received $11,041 from 45 families. We're very grateful for these contributions and hope that those of you who have yet to donate plan to do so this week! Any amount is welcome.

**In addition to this amount, one school family, who wish to remain anonymous, has recently made a significant and inspiring donation to the Gifts of the Heart campaign. In their letter that accompanied their donation, they said that, "(We) are very grateful for the quality of Catholic education that our family is receiving at Sacred Heart." We offer our appreciation to that school family-- their gift will benefit all the children in the school!

PSAS AND 2010-2011 FINANCIAL AID
We do not want finances to prevent a family from remaining part of our school community, and will do our very best to help. If you have a question about financing tuition, please make an appointment to come and talk to me. If you believe your family will need financial assistance please complete the PSAS forms with the 2009 tax-return information. The forms must be postmarked by 2/19/10 so please have your forms in to us a week earlier, by the 11th of February.
The School Code required by PSAS is 3073.

Please note: THE PSAS FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FINANCIAL AID IN THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR.

I realize that asking for assistance is difficult. Please know that your inquiries and records are confidential, and that we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

GRANDPARENTS DAY
Thursday at 9 a.m. to 12 noon(ish)! If you have any questions, please let us know. Mrs. Awad and her tireless hospitality crew are very busy preparing everything for us. What amazing school spirit!! By the way, be sure to chat with your child so they are aware if grandparents/VIPs are coming or not. For the little ones especially, it is easier when the kids know what to expect-in that way, they are not disappointed unnecessarily.

SANDY FOEHR CLASSIC
Our annual basketball tournament, hosted by Sandy F. and our school for many years, is coming up beginning Wednesday. Thanks to all the organizers for their help. Organizers are still looking for volunteer help. Our Student council-led Pep Rally takes place earlier in the day. Students who attend two games (Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, for the full game) will receive a free-dress pass.

HALO CLUB
On the first meeting of the Halo Club, 53 students attended and made Valentines cards for meals on Wheels. Wow! Thanks so much to Mrs. Dionne-Reid and Mrs. Lambert, and their parents for making this possible for our students.

February 2010 Valentine Outreach - Cards and drawings for Senior Citizens

Christian Living and the HALO club are conducting a collection of drawings and cards for seniors receiving Meals on Wheels. These drawings and cards may be as simple as a Valentine's greeting to let someone know that they are being thought about. What a delightful surprise for the seniors that receive them!

We will be collecting before Mass on Thursday and the week leading up to Valentine's Day. Thank you for your continued support of our stewardship efforts within the greater community.

One Heart Program
A great job was done by all who decorated the nature scene with colored hands. Thanks to Mrs. Schelegle, Holly Anderson and Cathleen Harter for all your effort and hard work. The mural turned out beautifully!

Faith Formation DSJ Logo

This past weekend, we listened to the Word of God tell us about gifts. Think about the gifts you received at Christmas - some you love, others are collecting dust, and still others were returned. God gives us gifts--some we love, some collect dust, and still others we would like to return.  Why does God give us gifts? Why does He place them before us and yet we know so little about some of them? A gift needs to be unwrapped, taken out of the box, and shredded of all the extra packaging materials. God's Word says there are three great gifts:  faith, hope and love. The greatest of these gifts is love. So let us ask God, how do we love one another? God even tells us to love our enemies.

I think about a time when I was in college and a particular student really bothered me. I am not sure why. So I started praying and asking God to change my heart toward this person. By the end of the week, my attitude towards him was absolutely changed and we became friends. We may know people who bother us. I encourage you to ask God to help you change your heart toward that person.

Saint of the Week: St. Paul Miki and CompanionsSt.Paul Miki and Companions
Saturday February 6

Nagasaki, Japan, is familiar to Americans as the city on which the second atomic bomb was dropped, immediately killing over 37,000 people. Three and a half centuries before, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill, now known as the Holy Mountain, overlooking Nagasaki. Among them were priests, brothers and laymen, Franciscans, Jesuits and members of the Secular Franciscan Order; there were catechists, doctors, simple artisans and servants, old men and innocent children-all united in a common faith and love for Jesus and his Church. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit and a native of Japan, has become the best known among the martyrs of Japan.

While hanging upon a cross Paul Miki preached to the people gathered for the execution: "The sentence of judgment says these men came to Japan from the Philippines, but I did not come from any other country. I am a true Japanese. The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I certainly did teach the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason I die. I believe that I am telling only the truth before I die. I know you believe me and I want to say to you all once again: Ask Christ to help you to become happy. I obey Christ. After Christ's example I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain."

When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Christians lived around Nagasaki and that they had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were finally canonized in 1862.
