Principal's Corner
Dear Sacred Heart Families, REFLECTION I
found a great story on the internet involving Desmond Tutu, the
Anglican bishop from South Africa. During the height of apartheid, he
was walking down a sidewalk in Johannesburg when a white
man came toward him. As the two neared each other, the white gentleman
shouted, "You'd better get off the sidewalk! I don't make way for
gorillas!" With a graceful bow and a little sidestep, Bishop Tutu moved
off the sidewalk, gestured for the fellow to pass and said, "I
do!" Instead of escalating the situation, Bishop Tutu
did not back down but stood up to the threat, even with a bit of
his famous humor. In this way, he maintained his dignity and challenged
the racist man's view-- he may have even changed it! Martin Luther King
did much the same thing, on a larger scale-something to reflect upon
this week. GIFTS OF THE HEART Don't
forget! Our total so far is slightly under 10K in donations. Thanks to
all of you who have been so generous-your support of our vision is very
meaningful for us. The current campaign ends during Catholic School's
Week! PSAS AND 2010-2011 FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION DEADLINE COMING SOON! We
do not want finances to prevent a family from remaining part of our
school community, and will do our very best to help. Though our tuition
rates for next year are not yet determined, if you believe your family
will need financial assistance please complete the PSAS forms. The
forms must be postmarked by 2/19/10 so please have your forms in to us
a week earlier, by the 11th of February.
The School Code required by PSAS is 3073. The forms are available in the office, and are attached here. Please note: THE PSAS FORMS MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR FINANCIAL AID IN THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR.
I
realize that asking for assistance is difficult. Please know that your
inquiries and records are confidential, and that we are happy to answer
any questions you may have. Thank you. OPEN HOUSE Open House: January 31- 10 Am to 1 PM Observation Days (for prospective parents only) Feb. 2 & 9: 9 AM to noon WE NEED YOU! On
Friday, we will be sending home some OPEN HOUSE brochures for you to
pass out to local businesses, and to your friends who might be
interested in our school. Please direct your friends and neighbors to
our website as well. There they will find our application forms, and
information about our Open House and Observation Days. Please help us make these events successful for our school. All
school parents and students are welcome to attend the Open House.
Please join us for mass at 9 AM, after which the Open House will begin.
SANDY FOEHR CLASSIC This
excellent basketball tournament, hosted by our school for many years,
is coming up during Catholic School's week. It begins Wednesday, Feb.
3. Plase come and support Mrs. Sandy, our student athletes, and our
school. GRANDPARENT'S/SPECIAL PERSON'S DAY In
today's envelope, you will find an information flyer for this year's
event. Our Hospitality committee is busily helping with the
preparations for this event (and for the Open House!). Many
thanks to their efforts and commitment! We know it will be a special
day. PROGRESS PREPORTS We
are halfway through the 2nd trimester already! Please look for your
child's progress report this Friday, and use SchoolSpeak to access your
child's current grades. Remember that the progress reports are meant to
provide a window into your child's current progress in the class, and,
if necessary, identify social and academic areas that need addressing.
The teachers are happy to answer your questions regarding the reports. IN THE CLASSROOMS... AWASO ACADEMY BOOK DRIVE Wow...
we have collected a lot of books. Thanks so much. I know that Fr.
Mensah will be most impressed when he comes to visit the students this
Friday. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR In
8th grade, a Holocaust survivor visited the class and related his
harrowing tale to a spellbound group of 8th graders. The visitor, Mr.
Adam Cintz, a neighbor of Nicholle Grubinskas' grandfather, is 100
years old and spoke for over an hour. Among other things, Mr. Cintz's
reminded me of the amazing stories all of our elderly people are eager
to share with young people, and for us to take advantage of that. The
students came away with a great learning experience. God bless, Tom Pulchny

Faith Formation
Seeing all the rain this week reminds me of this Scripture passage from the prophet Isaiah:
" For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth, and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; So shall My word be which goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, without accomplishing what I desire" (Isaiah 55:10). God's word has an effect and an affect on all who hear it. By its very definition the Word of God renews, transforms and replenishes the soul. This past year I have been teaching John's Gospel and personally it has challenged me, strengthened my faith and renewed my spirit.
Lastly, let us keep in our prayers the people of Haiti and if you would like to contribute to the Haiti people through Catholic Relief follow the link To donate directly to the Haiti relief:

Saint of the Week: Blessed Mother Marianne Cope Saturday January 23
Though leprosy scared off most people
in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the
woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage
helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a
territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898).
Mother
Marianne's generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005,
beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke "the language of truth
and love" to the world, said Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins, prefect of
the Congregation for Saints' Causes. Cardinal Martins, who presided at
the beatification Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, called her life "a
wonderful work of divine grace." Speaking of her special love for
persons suffering from leprosy, he said, "She saw in them the suffering
face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother."
On
January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbara Cope of
Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two
years later the Cope family immigrated to the United States and settled
in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August
1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis
in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year,
she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Marianne held the
post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of
her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was
superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much
that would be useful during her years in Hawaii.
Elected
provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in 1881.
Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to
run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having
leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and
Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35
of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne
and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the
Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they
also opened a hospital and a school for girls.
In 1888, Mother
Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for
"unprotected women and girls" there. The Hawaiian government was quite
hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not
have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the
home that Blessed Damien DeVeuster (d. 1889) had established for men
and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing
cleanliness, pride and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty
dresses for the women were part of her approach.
Awarded the
Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a
poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work
faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian
people and still work on Molokai. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918.
