Principal's Corner
REFLECTION It's
become a tradition in my sister's family that all Christmas wrappings
are saved and then used to make party hats on New Year's Eve. Each
person at the party gets 45 minutes to choose materials, privately
construct a hat, and present the final product. There are funny prizes
of course. The hats are always a hoot, but what I like most is
something else: I like the way the activity helps to recycle (ok,
'extend') the joyful feeling of Christmas, wrappings, trappings, and
all, into the New Year. If the thought crossed your mind that this
activity may be a good metaphor for how the joy of Christ's birth is
meant to be "recycled" in our hearts throughout the New Year, you'd be
in good company. Happy New Year! CATHOLIC SCHOOL'S WEEK The
national theme this year is "Catholic Schools - Dividends for Life." We
will be celebrating the first week of February. Our Open House is
scheduled for Sunday, January 31st. Everyone is welcome... bring a
friend who might be interested in our school! GRANDPARENT'S/SPECIAL PERSON'S DAY We're
looking forward to a fine event for our students' grandparents and
friends. This year, Grandparent's day is scheduled for a Thursday,
February 4th. In addition to the other activities planned, we will have
our regular Thursday liturgy at 11 AM instead of 8 AM. Thank you! GIFTS OF THE HEART Our
annual Gifts of the Heart campaign is still going on. This year, we are
"Preparing students for a technology-rich world." . A NEW BROCHURE WILL
BE INCLUDED IN NEXT WEEK'S ENVELOPE. The campaign is short this
year! Thank you very much for your generosity. H1N1 VACCINES AVAILABLE TO GENERAL PUBLIC The
County Health Officer has notified us that that administration of the
H1N1 vaccine to the general public began yesterday. Retail providers
and pharmacies have already begun with their vaccination programs, and
the Health Officer still recommends the vaccine for all, especially
those in high risk groups. BUILDING AN ORGANIZED MIND Just
to let you know, this is a lecture presented by Dr. Damon Korb, Center
for Developing Minds on Wednesday, January 13, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm,
at St Leo the Great School, 1051 West San Fernando Street, San Jose. It
is a free event with complimentary on-site babysitting available with
RSVP. I think this is a great opportunity for parents. IN THE CLASSROOMS... In
December, our 8th graders helped out the Campbell Community Toy Program
and helped provide 868 children with gifts this Christmas. Thanks to
Mrs. Giammona, the parents, and the whole class for participating in
this important local charity program. God bless, Tom Pulchny

The
church that I attended as a child in Seattle had a holy water font with
a pelican on it. It always fascinated me. Years later when our church
was rebuilt, many items in the old church were sold and I bought it! I
often wondered why there was a pelican on it. I asked a bishop friend
of mine and he told me the story. In the middle ages, it was thought
that when a pelican could not find food for her offspring, it would
pluck from her breast and feed them her flesh. Well, today we know this
is not true but it looks like it. (She is actually regurgitating food
onto her breast.) I have the holy water font in my room and every time
I look at it I am reminded of the story. This Sunday is the baptism of Jesus. Each time we
enter church we bless ourselves with water and say "in the name of the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit." This is to
remind ourselves of our own baptism. The pelican did not feed her
offspring from her chest, but Jesus feeds us every time we are open to
His presence. The pelican did not suffer, but Jesus suffered to the
point of death to give us life and life more abundantly. The pelican
fed her offspring and Jesus said, I AM the bread of life come to me all
who find life burdensome and I will give you rest. Jesus was baptized
to go forth to show us the way, the truth and the life. We are baptized
to go forth and live the gospel. This Sunday as we are reminded of
Jesus' baptism, may we also be reminded what baptism calls us to do--to
go forth and live our lives according to the gospel.

Saint of the Week: Tuesday January 5
St. John Neumann
Perhaps
because the United States got a later start in the history of the
world, it has relatively few canonized saints, but their number is
increasing.
John Neumann was born in what is now the
Czech Republic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and
was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was
29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to
profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in
Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans.
At 41, as bishop of Philadelphia, he
organized the parochial school system into a diocesan one, increasing
the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time.
Gifted with outstanding organizing
ability, he drew into the city many teaching communities of sisters and
the Christian Brothers. During his brief assignment as vice provincial
for the Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial
movement. Well-known
for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on
October 13, 1963, John Neumann became the first American bishop to be
beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in St. Peter the Apostle
Church in Philadelphia.
