Principal's Corner
Hello Sacred Heart Families! On
the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year
1918, an armistice was signed, ending the "war to end all wars." My
father fought in the "war to end all wars" that followed the first one.
Lucky for me however, if it weren't for that terrible war, my parents
would have never met. There are silver linings.... The day is a day of
remembrance: "Lest we forget." In the United States, we set aside the
day to honor all veterans- all those, living and dead, who served our
country. As
Catholics, we have a duty to pass on the treasure of our faith to our
children. Likewise, as citizens, we have a duty to pass along our
gratitude for those who served, and make sure that the treasure of our
collective memory remains intact. Lest we forget.
Here
at school, we will join with people around the world in a minute of
silence at 11 AM. Please join us from your homes and workplaces. TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY! Once again, thank you all for a fantastic feast. To Mrs. Budenholzer and Mrs. Davis who headed up the day, and to all of you who helped out so much, we appreciate all you did for us. OPEN HOUSE: Don't forget that our Pre-K and Kinder Open House
is this Saturday, November 14. If you know a family who is interested
in checking out preschools or kindergartens, please bring them along.
Thank you for promoting Sacred Heart! PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES:
Thanks to all of you for your flexibility with the conferences last
week. It was great being able to talk with a lot of parents I had never
met before! I heard a lot of positive comments and just want to remind
you to follow up on anything that is of concern to you. Thank you. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND:
We are very excited that that so many students have signed up to create
teams for Odyssey of the Mind! If you can help as a coach please
let us know. FLU UPDATE: On Sunday
November 15th, and Saturday November 21st, the H1N1 vaccine will be
free at the Public Health Department clinics. At Santa Clara County
Fairgrounds EXPO HALL, 334 Tully Road, San José, CA 95111. The
following groups are eligible:
- Pregnant women
- People who live with or provide care for infants under six months;
- Healthcare and emergency medical services workers;
- Children and young adults between the ages of 6 months and 24 years; and,
- Adults between the ages of 25 and 64 years who have medical
conditions that put them at higher risk for flu-related complications.
God bless, Tom Pulchny |

Christian Living by Kathy Lambert
Christian Living November Outreach: Handwritten Cards and letters to our soldiers serving in the military overseas.
Our School Can Help!
Each month, The American Red Cross, (ARC) program Operation: Care
and Comfort ships thousands of pounds of care packages to our troops
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The most important items in these
packages are letters, cards, and drawings from "home." Many of our
deployed troops do not receive mail, and they cherish anything that is
sent and shared with them.
We need letters, cards, etc. to send in the holiday packages!
Patriotic or thank you themed letters are always popular. The troops
love to hear about current events, and what the kids are studying or
participating in, activity wise. Small arts and crafts projects, such
as paper ornaments, are also a great pick me up for our troops during
the holiday season.
The ARC read each letter for content, so please do not put
them in sealed envelopes. You can, however, have the kids place them in
an unsealed envelope with your school address as the return address, to
encourage troops to write back.
It is suggested that you include their teacher's name or classroom number and the school address on each letter.
Thank you for your continuing support of our stewardship efforts.

Faith Formation
Luke's gospel is one of the synoptic gospels "seeing through
the same eyes." However, what was Luke's focus? What was Luke's worldview which
made it unique from the other two synoptic gospels? Luke liked to celebrate, gather people
together and he had a strong notion of community. The theme throughout the
gospel is to rejoice and give thanks to God. There is this emerging work of God
throughout history, which culminates with Jesus. Luke speaks to the poor, the oppressed and
the lowly. Jesus is born in a stable, visited by shepherds--NOT kings--in
Luke's gospel. The angels, shepherds all are rejoicing and giving thanks. Mary
prays, "My soul does magnify the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my
savior." Jesus delivers forgiveness of
sins, salvation and sets the oppressed free to all who are open to His message
of salvation. One is excited about the message of hope and salvation - this is
truly the good news! What is in our life we would like to be liberated from?
What holds us back from truly rejoicing in the Lord? This month we celebrate
Thanksgiving - let us start thanking God NOW for what He is about to do in our
life. Every time we go to Mass the
priest prays, "Lord it is right to give you thanks and praise always and everywhere."
Let us give God thanks and praise as Luke did so well.

Saint of the Week: St. Francis Cabrini
Friday November 13
Dear Friends and Family: This week
there was no shortage of really great Saints that are being celebrated,
from St. Leo, St. Martin of Tours, and St. Francis Cabrini. This week
we will concentrate on St. Francis. Frances Xavier Cabrini was the
first United States citizen to be canonized. Her deep trust in the
loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman
doing the work of Christ.
Refused
admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a
teacher, she began charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage
in Cadogno, Italy. In September 1877, she made her vows there and took
the religious habit.
When
the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, he named Frances prioress of
the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Seven young women from the
orphanage joined with her. Since her early childhood in Italy,
Frances had wanted to be a missionary in China but, at the urging of
Pope Leo XIII, Frances went west instead of east. She traveled with six
sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian
immigrants living there.
She
found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived
in New York City, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the
United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return
to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the
archbishop's residence all the more determined to establish that
orphanage. And she did.
In
35 years Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to
caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing
great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, she
organized schools and adult education classes.
As
a child, she was always frightened of water, unable to overcome her
fear of drowning. Yet, despite this fear, she traveled across the
Atlantic Ocean more than 30 times. She died of malaria in her own
Columbus Hospital in Chicago.
