Principal's Corner
Hello Sacred Heart Families! On
October 11th of this year, Pope Benedict XVI canonized five new saints:
Fr. Damien of Molokai, Jeanne Jugan, Zygmunt Felinski, Francisco Coll y
Guitart, Rafael Arniaz Baron. To be honest, I've only ever heard of one
of them, Fr. Damien, the priest of the infamous leper colony. Although,
St. Zygmunt Felinski was Polish and I grew up in a VERY Polish
household, I should know him but I don't. In this week's gospel is the story of the widow and
her measly mite. She didn't seem at all concerned with the cost to her
personally, and so she gave of herself. Fr. Damien gave a lot more than
a "mite" (and I'm sure all the other new saints did as well) but the
point is that he gave of himself and didn't count the cost. The coins
we have are the skills and the time we have to give to others. By the
way, my Dad, who I'm sure, is in heaven right now, will be so proud of
St. Felinski that he won't stop telling everyone up there. TEACHER APPRECIATION DAY! THANK YOU PARENTS!
What a feast we on staff were all treated to today in the faculty room.
The room was so beautifully decorated and is chock full of your
delicious cooking and donations. The HEART you put into this day is
something for which we are deeply grateful (and full!) OPEN HOUSE MATERIALS:
In your Envelope today, you will find cards that advertise our upcoming
Pre-K and Kinder Open House on November 14. Please distribute these to
anyone you know who might be interested in visiting our school, and
considering enrollment of their children. We need to build our
enrollment from the bottom up, and our greatest resource is you! Thank
you for promoting our school. It benefits all of us! HALLOWE'EN CARNIVAL:
Thank you to all the parents who volunteered with their time and
donations to make the Hallowe'en Carnival such a success. It was great
to see so many smiling faces and really the cool costumes on all the
children. What creativity and what a great community! It's all for
them, isn't it? PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES:
Conferences are going very well. Thanks for understanding if you
experienced a double booking or a glitch. There were a few of these,
but they've been ironed out. DAY OF THE DEAD:
Mrs. Sanjines had her students put together dioramas known as
"altars" for the Day of the Dead-traditionally November 2. Please
come by and check them out, along with all the other displays of
castles form the 7th grade class in the hallways. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND/ CHRISTMAS PARADE/DANCE CLASS: Flyers for all of these are in today's envelopes. Please take the time to check out these excellent programs! FRIDAY HOLIDAY: This Friday, there is no school God bless, Tom Pulchny

Halloween Carnival Thank You
by Ms. Verhoftstadt Thanks
to all who participated in the Halloween Carnival, it was a raging
success! We could not have done so well with out the help of our
wonderful parents. A huge THANK YOU goes out to the Vlahpouliotis
family, for their generous donation of pumpkins to the students.
Each child was invited to take a small to medium pumpkin home and the
other pumpkins used for decoration were sold for $1 each at the
carnival. Another huge THANK YOU to the Cargill family for their
generous donation of lunch from Rio Adobe, it was delicious!!
Thank you to the Student Council and Mrs.Schelegle for all of their
hard work! Yet another huge THANK YOU to the Walewski
family for letting us use the straw bales for our photo area. The
pumpkins, straw and scarecrows make for a wonderful photo
opportunity. More huge THANKS need to go to all of our donors and
volunteers, without you this carnival would not succeed. The bake
walk was one of the most popular attractions thanks to all the yummy
donations and delicious treats. The science room was almost
filled! The snack shack too was a popular spot,
what with all the candy, popcorn, nachos and refreshing water.
The raffle tables were quite a hit with all of the generous donations
from dolls, Legos, and books to iPods and a Nintendo DSi. This is
where most of the money is spent, so we really appreciate all of the
generous donations for this fundraiser. Lastly, this carnival
would not run smoothly without all of the help from our parent
volunteers. We had so many volunteers this year, that we added
parents to booths that had previously only had student oversight.
The parents just ensured that things ran smoothly. So in short,
let us just say from the entire school; THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
to all who helped in any way!

Christian Living by Kathy Lambert
Christian Living November Outreach: Handwritten Cards and letters to our soldiers serving in the military overseas.
Our School Can Help!
Each
month, The American Red Cross, (ARC) program Operation: Care and
Comfort ships thousands of pounds of care packages to our troops
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The most important items in these
packages are letters, cards, and drawings from "home." Many of our
deployed troops do not receive mail, and they cherish anything that is
sent and shared with them.
We
need letters, cards, etc. to send in the holiday packages! Patriotic or
thank you themed letters are always popular. The troops love to hear
about current events, and what the kids are studying or participating
in, activity wise. Small arts and crafts projects, such as paper
ornaments, are also a great pick me up for our troops during the
holiday season.
The
ARC read each letter for content, so please do not put them in sealed
envelopes. You can, however, have the kids place them in an unsealed
envelope with your school address as the return address, to encourage
troops to write back.
It is suggested that you include their teacher's name or classroom number and the school address on each letter.
Thank you for your continuing support of our stewardship efforts.

Odyssey of the Mind by Roberta Witte
It is time to join together to solve an interesting dilemma!
We need more teams for Sacred Heart to compete in this years' Odyssey
of the Mind. Odyssey of the Mind is a problem solving competition for
students of all ages.
In the past, Sacred Heart teams have won at the local level, gone
on to the State competition and even on to the World competition!
Twice! Teams of 7 students select a problem to work on and find an
adult to be the team coach. Some teams have already been formed, but we
can have a team for each Problem in both Divisions so we could send 10
teams!! See which one interests you!
Problems this year: #1: Nature Trail'R: Build a
human-powered vehicle that goes on a camping trip! It will have to
overcome obstacles, clean up the environment, encounter wildlife and
undergo a repair. #2 Return to The Gift of Flight: make and operate a series of aircraft that will complete a variety of flight plans! #3.
Discovered Treasures: create and present an original performance about
two archaeological treasures, one from history and one you create that
will be found in the future! #4. Column Structure: design and build balsa wood columns that will support as much weight as possible! #5.
Food Court: Create and present a humorous performance where a food item
is accused of being unhealthy and must defend itself. #6. Surprise
Party: create and present a humorous performance that includes a
surprise party for a team-created character. This needs to
include an original party noisemaker! (only for K-2nd )
Teams are made up of groups of students that can be a mixture of grades as follows. Division I -grades K-5 (less than 12 yrs of age by May 1, 2010) Division II grades 6-8 (less than 15 yrs of age by May 1, 2010)

Philipines Relief
by Cristina Yujuico Dear Sacred Heart Family, Thank
you very much for all your prayers, support and donations for the
Philippines Relief. As a result of your generosity we were able to pack
46 boxes! Our boxes were filled with clothes, shoes, comforters,
blankets, toiletries, children's books, toys, all items that will make
the victims very happy at this very difficult time. These
donations will be going to the Assumption Sisters. They will be
distributing these to their badly hit outreach schools and
communities. All monetary donations will be joined
together very soon, and these will be going to CRS (Catholic
Relief Services), who also has an office in Manila that will make sure
that the funds get to the victims who need it most. Sacred Heart
Sacred raised $880.00 for UNICEF and CRS. Thank you so much! I'd
also like to say thank you Mr. Pulchny, for being so supportive with
this whole relief effort! Many Thanks go out to the following
people:
- Mrs. Lambert and Mrs. McCarrick
- Mrs. Awad and Mrs. Lara
- The 6th grade class and Student Council
- Gavin and Kendall McCarrick
Please
continue to pray for all the victims of Ketsana in Manila and its
surrounding provinces, as areas are still flooded and the
conditions in the shelters are dire due to overcrowding. There is
also another typhoon hitting the North once again. Please pray
that this one leaves right away, as the horrible flooding from
Parma has not yet subsided Thank you and God bless. |

Faith Formation
I asked my niece, Mary Grace age 10, what she would like to be when
she grows up. She looked at me without hesitation
and said, "Uncle Patrick I want to be a saint." I was a bit surprised
and said to her that is ultimately what we are called to be. I thought
about what Jesus said, "without holiness one shall not see God."
The Church has a universal call to holiness for all
believers. In the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception in Washington, DC, largest Catholic church in the Americas,
on the back wall is an art piece that is titled the "Universal Call to
Holiness". In this depiction it has numerous people walking to
the light of God. So what does holiness mean? To be holy, literally
means to be set apart. Our lives are called to be set apart to God.
This week at the morning assembly we will be discussing saints.
Our new shout this week is "We are called." - "To be
saints!" Hopefully we focus on our ultimate call.

Saint of the Week: St. Nicholas Tavelic and Companions Friday November 6
Nicholas
and his three companions are among the 158 Franciscans who have been
martyred in the Holy Land since the friars became custodians of the
shrines in 1335.
Nicholas was born in 1340 to a wealthy and noble family in Croatia.
He joined the Franciscans and was sent with Deodat of Rodez to
preach in Bosnia. In 1384 they volunteered for the Holy Land missions
and were sent there.
They looked after the holy places, cared for the Christian pilgrims and studied Arabic. In
1391 Nicholas, Deodat, Peter of Narbonne and Stephen of Cuneo decided
to take a direct approach to converting the Muslims. On November 11,
1391, they went to the huge Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem and asked to
see the Qadi (Muslim official). Reading from a prepared statement, they
said that all people must accept the gospel of Jesus. When they were
ordered to retract their statement, they refused. After beatings and
imprisonment, they were beheaded before a large crowd.
Nicholas and his companions were canonized in 1970.
They are the only Franciscans martyred in the Holy Land to be
canonized.
