Principal's Corner
Thank you, parents, for helping with
our successful testing week last week. Appointments were kept to a
minimum and everyone looked well rested. There is no doubt that the
morning routine at home helps set the tone for the whole day at school.
On the playground, I regularly ask the students "Are you having fun on
your tests?" (a little tongue in cheek!). Almost all students responded
with an "Oh yes, Mr. Pulchny." That is Music to my ears!
Thanks
as well for helping to check your child's uniform every morning.
Generally speaking, the students are wearing their uniform responsibly,
neatly and respectfully. It's all a work in progress. The new routines,
including the Thursday Morning Mass, are working well this year, and I
thank you very much for your support. It's so nice to see many of you
attend Mass along with all the children. The Music Spirit Team is also
doing a fantastic job with leading us in song. Thursdays are becoming
the highlight of my week. Our Student Council is working hard to
ensure that the morning assemblies are prayerful and an effective start
to the day. Children learn responsibility and courteousness at an early
age primarily through the example set by their peers and parents.
SCHOOL FACILITIES IMPROVEMENTS:
As mentioned last week, our facilities
received some needed improvements over the summer. Much of the work and
time was donated "at cost" and we thank the following vendors very
much:
- HVA/C -- Allied Air Conditioning
- General Contractor -- Cribari Construction
- Electrician -- West Valley Electric
- Painting -- BJowers Paining
- Flooring -- The Carpet Center
- Plumbing -- Greg Lane Plumbing
- Roofing -- Statewide Roofing
- Sanitizers & Eco-aware products -- Total Quality
- Maintenance (The Turley Family)
- Windows-- Mission Glass
Next week is One Heart Week and next Friday
(October 2nd) is a school holiday for the students. The math teachers
will be attending a math in-service all day and the rest will be
working on our accreditation self study document.
Have a nice week! Tom Pulchny

Christian Living
Happenings in Christian Living:
The
school supply outreach recipients, Hubbard Elementary School in Alum
Rock were overwhelmed with gratitude. Recently the San Jose School
district had made deep cuts to their classroom supplies budget. They
were very grateful to receive the supplies and support of Sacred Heart
School and Parish.
Did
you know that we expanded our monthly collections to the Parish? The
Christian Living Program is a part of the ministry group "Act as
Christians in the World" within the parish. With the support of the
parish and Christian Living we were able to fill a GMC Tahoe with
school supplies. Thank you to Trudi Dionne-Reid and her sons, Robert
and Kyle for sorting and delivering them.
This
past Wednesday a carload of eighth graders and I took a field trip
after school to work at Sacred Heart Community Services. We hung
clothing on hangers, sorted and replenished the racks where SHCS
clients choose gently worn items for their family members. The students
agree that this service opportunity is not only fun but a rewarding way
to earn their service hours. Thank you to Shannon Carte, Madison Miller
and Christian Corrales for sharing your time and energy doing this
crucial ministry work.
Did
you also know that during all third Sunday Mass celebrations gently
used clothing, shoes, blankets and jackets are collected by the Parish
to be delivered to SHCS? What a convenient way to share the outgrown
clothing that we would have to drive to South San Jose to donate! The
collection spot is located to left of the portico right outside the
Church doors.
We're
off to a great year with junior high and primary grade representatives
that have boundless energy. The possibilities are endless. We are
working on providing a clearing house with contacts and opportunities
for families to share their time, talent and treasure with the greater
community. We will send the information to you once we've compiled the
non-profit list and have it approved.
Our October monthly Christian
Living and "Act as Christians in the World" Ministry Outreach is Goodwill
Industries. Sacred Heart Parish will serve as a collection site the first
weekend of October. A trailer will be parked on the premises from Wednesday afternoon,
Sept. 30th through Sunday Oct. 4, 2009.
Here's what they will accept:
-
Gently
used washed or dry-cleaned clothing, shoes, jackets, coats
- Children's
games and toys that have all the pieces, sports equipment, books and multimedia
-
Ewaste
- electronics which include: monitors, computer hard drives, printers, scanners,
keyboards, mice - wired or wireless, speakers, cords, cables
-
Recycle
cell phones, ink and toner cartridges
-
Kitchen
items, gadgets, plates, cups, coffee pots, bedding, lamps, vcr/dvd media
-
Here's
what they cannot accept:
-
Mattresses
and pillows, large appliances; washers, dryers, office furniture
-
Auto
parts, car seats, snow skis, pianos or organs
-
Gas
powered garden tools, camping equipment containing gas, oil or butane, fish
tanks.
-
Hazardous

Thank you for your generous
support of our stewardship effort..

Saint of the Day: September 23, 2009 Padre Pio of Pietreclina
In
one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II
canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. It was the 45th
canonization ceremony in Pope John Paul's pontificate. More than
300,000 people braved blistering heat as they filled St. Peter's Square
and nearby streets. They heard the Holy Father praise the new saint for
his prayer and charity. "This is the most concrete synthesis of Padre
Pio's teaching," said the pope. He also stressed Padre Pio's witness to
the power of suffering. If accepted with love, the Holy Father
stressed, such suffering can lead to "a privileged path of
sanctity."
Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up
in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice (1898-1903 and 1910-17)
his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income.
At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of
Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After
he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917 he
was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the
city of Bari on the Adriatic.
Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick
and suffering. At his urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby Mount
Gargano. The idea arose in 1940; a committee began to collect money.
Ground was broken in 1946. Building the hospital was a technical wonder
because of the difficulty of getting water there and of hauling up the
building supplies. This "House for the Alleviation of Suffering" has
350 beds. A number of people have reported cures they believe were
received through the intercession of Padre Pio.
Those who assisted at his
Masses came away edified; several curiosity seekers were deeply moved.
Like St. Francis, Padre Pio sometimes had his habit torn or cut by
souvenir hunters. One of Padre Pio's sufferings was that unscrupulous
people several times circulated prophecies that they claimed originated
from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an
opinion on matters that he felt belonged to Church authorities to
decide. He died on September 23, 1968, and was beatified in 1999.
