Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in planning and organizing the Parish Festival this past weekend. The event was a big success due to the hard work of many people, and their volunteer spirit. By all accounts, the festival was a lot of fun for adults and children alike. For those of you who missed the dunking fun, we are thinking of having the Dunk Tank set up outside of our offices during the coldest week of January. I'll let Father and Patrick go first.

Talking about Father Gary, this coming weekend marks Father's Silver Jubilee as a Priest. This is a very happy event for him, and for all of us. Please remember to keep Father in your prayers. CONGRATULATIONS FATHER GARY!

INNISBROOK FUNDRAISER: Don't forget to sell, and earn yourself some fundraising hours! This coming weekend is the last weekend of the sale!!

SCHOOL FACILITIES IMPROVEMENTS: As mentioned a few weeks ago, our facilities received some needed improvements over the summer.

  • Each classroom now equipped with automatic hand sanitizing stations.
  • Some classrooms and other rooms painted.
  • Ceiling and roof repairs carried out.
  • New carpeting installed in lower Science and math.
  • New gigantic white board installed in math lab.
  • Electrical system upgrade for increased HVAC demand.
  • Air conditioning added in the Kindergarten, 5th, and 7th grade classrooms.

These are all big projects, and they were made possible through your donations, and the generosity of the vendors who supplied the labor, expertise, and time. Much of the work and time was donated "at cost." We thank these vendors very much:

TEACHER AIDES: As many of you know, we have two teacher's aides in the lower grades. Mrs. Salcido and Mrs. Morgan are now scheduling their time in the Kindergarten, First grade, Third Grade and Fifth grade classrooms. Classrooms are busy places with, among other things, lots of checklists to complete and work to collect. If you are interested in volunteering in a classroom for service hours, please let me know.

SLEEP: Please be sure that your children get enough sleep. The amounts of sleep children have impacts their achievement in school. Children ages 5 to 12 need 10 to 11 hours of sleep each night. Yes they do! Get your kids to bed by 8 p.m. every night. If not, the lack of sleep accumulates and over time and increases the "sleep debt." Dr. William Dement, founder of the Stanford Sleep Clinic, says that children of all ages are suffering from "accumulated sleep debt," and that this is a cause for serious concern. Besides the fact that their brains are growing rapidly and need sleep, we are asking children to work hard in school. Tell your children that without enough sleep, they can:

  • Forget what was learned.
  • Have trouble making good choices.
  • Be grumpy and in a bad mood.
  • Have trouble playing games and sports.
  • Be less patient with brothers, sisters, and friends.
  • Have trouble listening to parents and teachers.

Children and young teens require more sleep!  While you're at it you all could go to sleep too! Just call me the sleep police!

Have a great week!  Get lots of sleep!  Zzzzzzzzz!

Saint of the Day: September 15, 2009
Our Lady of Sorrows
Our Lady of Sorrows
For a while there were two feasts in honor of the Sorrowful Mother: one going back to the 15th century, the other to the 17th century. Both were celebrated by the universal Church: one on the Friday before Palm Sunday, the other in September.

The principal biblical references to Mary's sorrows are in Luke 2:35 and John 19:26-27. The Lucan passage is Simeon's prediction about a sword piercing Mary's soul; the Johannine passage relates Jesus' words to Mary and to the beloved disciple. Many early Church writers interpret the sword as Mary's sorrows, especially as she saw Jesus die on the cross. Thus, the two passages are brought together as prediction and fulfillment.

St. Ambrose (December7) in particular sees Mary as a sorrowful yet powerful figure at the cross. Mary stood fearlessly at the cross while others fled. Mary looked on her Son's wounds with pity, but saw in them the salvation of the world. As Jesus hung on the cross, Mary did not fear to be killed but offered herself to her persecutors.
